A Legacy of Proven Performance

With years of hands-on experience in training and field trials, HILLCOUNTRY Gundogs has built a solid reputation for developing top-performing hunting dogs. Specializing in English Cocker Spaniels and other upland hunting breeds, their comprehensive program focuses on shaping confident, driven, and reliable dogs. Every dog goes through structured obedience, targeted retrieving drills, and advanced field exercises designed to simulate real-world hunting conditions—preparing them to perform with precision and skill in any upland environment.

Tailored Training for Dogs and Handlers Alike

What truly sets HILLCOUNTRY Gundogs apart is their personalized approach to training. Chad and Sara Leonard understand that no two dogs are the same—and neither are their handlers. That’s why every training plan is customized based on each dog’s personality, behavior, and learning style. Before beginning a regimen, Chad closely observes and reads each dog to understand what motivates them and how best to build their confidence. By focusing on attitude and mindset throughout the process, even soft or insecure dogs consistently reach high levels of success.

Remarkably, HILLCOUNTRY Gundogs has never had a single “washout.” Not once has a client received a call saying their dog “won’t make it.” This extraordinary record is a direct result of the Leonards’ ability to adapt and respond to each dog’s unique needs—ensuring every dog is set up for success. In addition, handlers are an essential part of the process. The program emphasizes communication, timing, and teamwork between dog and owner, helping clients develop into confident, skilled handlers.

A Deep Love for English Cocker Spaniels

While HILLCOUNTRY Gundogs work with a variety of upland breeds, the English Cocker Spaniel holds a special place in their hearts. Energetic, intelligent, and highly trainable, these dogs excel in the field with their sharp noses and tireless drive. Whether preparing for hunting trips or field trial competitions, HILLCOUNTRY takes pride in shaping English Cockers into elite gundogs that perform with enthusiasm and discipline.
